José H. Zagal

a National Science Award

Chilean electrochemist known worldwide and a passionate trailblazer in the world of molecular electrocatalysis.

About Me

His research has brought him international acclaim—exploring how molecular catalysts can reduce oxygen to create clean energy—and has led to pioneering insights into how metal phthalocyanines interact in electrochemical reactions.

His journey began with a chemistry degree from the University of Chile, followed by a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University and postdoctoral research at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Along the way, he has published over 255 research papers, contributed to multiple books, and registered three patents, all of which have earned him over 13,000 citations and a global reputation. As a proud recipient of the Chilean National Award for Natural Sciences, he has been recognized not only for his scientific contributions but also for his efforts to strengthen the field in Chile and beyond. He is honored to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Distinguished Member of the Electrochemical Society.

His influence extends through his mentorship; at the University of Santiago de Chile, he has supervised dozens of doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate theses, with a firm belief in developing new talent. Whether serving as President of the Iberoamerican Society of Electrochemistry, founding the Chilean section of the Electrochemical Society, or inspiring young scientists, he is driven by a love for discovery, connection, and pushing the boundaries of electrochemistry.
